Fall foliage is the perfect time for a road trip in New England. The trees shine in bright colors and hikes through the forest are extra beautiful while markets and farms burst with delicious apples and pumpkins.
New Hampshire
The drive from the coast of Maine into the sun-filled, colorful hinterland is a beautiful journey. The White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire is a perfect place for fall foliage because of the great views, hikes and drives you have here. Drive up mighty Mount Washington at Pinkham Notch Visitor Center or along Kancamagus highway for the perfect fall foliage with red and organe colored trees. Beautiful are also the Glen Ellis falls and the small village Jackson with a classic wood-covered bridge and cute General store. North Conway is a quirky perfect mountain town with LLBean shop, Zeb’s General store and the beautiful, bright Conway Scenic Railroad station. The Metropolitan coffeehouse and Frontside coffee are good places to eat a sandwich and sit in the sun.
Vermont
Driving further west you enter the idyllic state of Vermont. An interesting and fun route is driving the Route 100 spanning from the north to south Vermont right to the Massachusetts border. Stowe is a lovely quintessential New England village in the green hills. A typical white steeple, a big General Store and picturesque Main Road make this small town a place worth visiting. But the nature around Stowe is the main attraction. Fall foliage is a great time to come here, when the trees shine in bright orange colors, while in winter it becomes a big skiing area. Drive to the Stowe Mountain Resort ten minutes out of town and go up with the bright red gondola to enjoy a great view over the soft Vermont hills spreading in all directions. You can do some nice hikes with great mountain views here as well. Or stroll around the villages Main Road along the church and nice shops like Shaw’s General Store or The Country Store. A minute away on Pond street you find the Helen Day Art Center in a classical New England style villa.
From Stowe it’s a twenty minute drive to the Ben & Jerry’s Factory in Waterbury. Here you can take a fun tour and get a free sample. Great is also the Cold Hollow Cider Mill in Waterbury, they make the best apple cider donuts in the world! Drive along perfect, idyllic countryside and farms, calm lakes like lake Rescue or Echo. The old-fashioned Vermont Country Store in Weston also gives the typical New England feel.
Stay & Eat: Field Guide Hotel is a nice place to stay in Stowe, Vermont. It has modern-designed rooms and a young relaxed atmosphere. It’s only three minutes by car outside the town centre and right across the great restaurant and brewery The Bench. The place feels very relaxed, local and serves delicious food. The atmosphere is cozy, young, fun and just very Vermont.
The Bethel Inn Resort in sleepy Bethel is a pretty place to stay near White Mountain National Forest and right in the fall-colored hills. There is the Good Food Store, a nice Deli with delicious burritos and salads and the korean restaurant Cho Sun.
