Come to the southern part of beautiful Sicily to see ancient temples and the beautiful white cliffs of Scala dei Turchi.
A great location for exploring the highlights of southern Sicily is Masseria Agnello. The hotel is located in an old typical estate with tasteful designed lounge rooms and a beautiful, huge garden area with a big pool and a terrace from which you can see the ocean.
Agrigento is famous for its ancient temple ruins, the amazing valley of the temples, or Valle dei Templi, is located about ten minutes by car from the city center. The huge archeological site is well visited by tourist groups, but the Ancient Greek temples, which are also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites are just very impressive and beautiful. Come as early as possible, they open at 8:30am and maybe even buy tickets online in advance, they cost around 10ā¬. There is also the lovely Kolymbethra Garden located at the site, but you need to buy additional tickets for it. Once you are in the park simply stroll around and admire the big temples and historic stones.
The city of Agrigento is a typical Sicilian city, small alleys, a big piazza and good food. You find a lot around Piazza Luigi Pirandello, try the Cassata at Caffe Concordia for example, or go to Osteria Ex Panificio for an excellent dinner. Most shops and restaurants are around via Atenea, here it is especially lively in the evening when people sit in the restaurants and bars. The simple cafe Girasole is nice for a drink among locals, for example.
Scala dei Turchi is the famous and lively beach with the white rocky cliff in Realmonte. It’s about 20 minutes from Agrigento and even though the cliffs are full of people, the ‘Stair of the Turks’ are still a really amazing place, especially beautiful at sunset. There are several beach bars and restaurants around, but if you climb up the cliffs a little bit and go further around, there will be less people and even another small part of the beach. In summer it can be difficult to park, even though there are some parking areas, so you might have to park a bit further away and walk to the cliffs. However, it’s totally worth it and there is usually a nice and relaxed atmosphere in the evening.
There is another lovely beach in Siculiana Marina, and it’s usually not as crowded as Scala dei Turchi. Here you can really enjoy a day at the beach and there are also some smaller white cliffs.
